Refugees Welcome

Why people flee

Millions of people see no other way out than to leave their homes, their families and often their entire existence behind to flee war, persecution and hardship. They come from countries plagued by armed conflict, political instability and systematic oppression. In many cases, they experience violence and persecution because of their ethnicity, religion or political views. Daily survival is a struggle, as there is often a lack of everyday things: Clean water, food, blankets, medicine or a protective roof over their heads. Without help, the survival of many people, especially children, would be at risk. Refugees often have no choice but to take dangerous and unsafe routes in the hope of finding safety and a better future.

Many leave their homeland due to poverty and economic hardship. The lack of job opportunities, education and health care forces them to leave their homes. Natural disasters and the consequences of climate change exacerbate this situation by uprooting entire communities and depriving them of their livelihoods.

The decision to flee is one of desperation and hope at the same time – hope for a life in safety and dignity, where they have opportunities for education, work and a better future for their children. International aid and support are crucial to offer these people protection and the opportunity to start a new life.

Challenges for refugees

01.

Language

Learning German is one of the biggest challenges. Without sufficient language skills, it is difficult to cope with everyday life, find work or integrate into society.

02.

Bureaucracy

Dealing with the German asylum procedure and the associated bureaucratic requirements can be very complex and confusing. Refugees often have to put up with long waiting times for their asylum applications and residence permits.

03.

Accommodation

Refugees are often housed in emergency shelters or shared accommodation, which are sometimes overcrowded and in poor condition. Finding a permanent and suitable living situation can be very difficult.

04.

Education and training

Access to educational institutions and vocational training is restricted for many refugees. This is especially true for those who had to interrupt their education during their flight.

05.

Labor market integration

It is often difficult to find a job that matches the qualifications and experience that refugees bring with them from their home countries. Recognition of qualifications and professional experience can be an additional hurdle.

06.

Social integration

Building a social network and integrating into the local community can be a challenge. Cultural differences and prejudices can make the integration process more difficult.

07.

Mental health

Many refugees have been through traumatic experiences and suffer from psychological stress. Access to psychological care and support is often limited.

08.

Legal uncertainty

Uncertainty about their legal status and the possibility of being able to stay in Germany is a burden for many refugees and makes their long-term planning and integration more difficult.

09.

Discrimination and prejudice

Refugees are sometimes confronted with prejudice and discrimination, which makes their integration process even more difficult.
